Under 21s Match Report: Basford United 3-1 Bedworth United

Harry Worgan12 Sep 2020 - 13:22

By Marc Williams We opened our under 21’s campaign on Saturday with an impressive victory Bedworth United at Greenwich Avenue.

Rory Harrison put us in front after only seven minutes before Mackenzie Rooney put into his net to draw the sides level.

Jacob Taylor then regained the home advantage before Sam Newell added a third late on to seal the victory in a first ever competitive fixture for Josh Law’s men.

The visitors began well and looked to the towering presence of Cameron Dunn to cause trouble; however, it was through our own undoing that nearly allowed the tricky Robbie Holton an early strike on goal, but skipper Declan Dunn did well to thwart.
Not to be outdone going forward, we reacted well and scored the game’s opening goal after seven minutes when James Tague’s neat pass to Harrison saw him slide home past Pat Kollie.

The game was soon level, however, when, four minutes later, Vinny Glaszick’s dangerous in- swinging corner was inadvertently flicked into his own goal by the unfortunate Rooney.

20 minutes in and Jericho Bonner, fresh from his superb showing in the FA Youth Cup
against Alfreton Town in the week, whipped in another excellent cross to find Tague who
could only flick a deft header marginally wide.

Harrison’s dragged effort wide on the half hour, following intricate build-up play with Jacob Taylor, was added indication of our threat and we began to take a firm foothold when, nine minutes before half-time, we took the lead. Another dangerous delivery, this time courtesy of Harrison on the right, was powerfully headed goalwards by Taylor, one of a host of impressive names on the day, via the underside of the crossbar to give us a deserved advantage at the break.

Gianni Musson was called upon seconds after the restart but the young ‘keeper did well to prevent David Ajao’s low effort after Bedworth regained possession deep in our territory, but the spell of extended pressure from Bedworth yielded little to further worry Musson.

Declan Dunn then slammed a header off the crossbar with 63 minutes played before, at the other end, Musson’s reflexes were eventually needed to wonderfully prevent Glaszick’s set piece two minutes later.

We continued to push for that elusive metaphoric cushion and Tague, one of several who can boast first team experience, really should have put the game to bed 14 minutes from time. His first-time volley looked destined for the goal but for Kollie’s fabulous outstretched arm from point-blank range, though the stalwart could do little to stop Sam Newell adding that important third to put the game out of the Warwickshire side’s reach as the referee called time on a fine team performance.
