Under 18s Match Report: Basford United 1-0 Grimsby Town (FA Youth Cup)

Harry Worgan22 Dec 2020 - 20:01

Our under 18s moved into the third round of the FA Youth Cup with a 1-0 win over Grimsby Town.

After a goalless first half, Sam Newell’s stunning 30 yard strike with little over ten minutes left was the difference.

There was a nervy start to proceedings as neither side created any real opportunities. Ryan Camm made a comfortable save to keep out Harvey Tomlinson, as the visitors had the first chance. Just a minute later Wayde Hines’ dipping free-kick was caught by Pat Boyes in the Grimsby goal.

The visitors had a period where they controlled the ball but we kept them at arm’s length with Tomlinson speculative effort, which was easily saved by Camm, their only effort of that spell.

A free-kick allowed us another opportunity as Hines rolled Ferdinand Bartley in down the right-hand side and put a delightful ball into the six-yard box but there was no one there for a tap in.

Our next best chance came on the 30-minute mark as Kiarne Nyemba did well to create some space before forcing Boyes into a good stop. We were then on the back foot as some good defending from captain Mackenzie Rooney and Callum Frogson got us out of trouble. Towards the end of the half Grimsby did manage to create a clear chance as Luis Adlard got in behind on the counter but the number nine’s effort was wide of the target, in the last action of the half.

Grimsby started the second half on the front foot and should took the lead less than five minutes after the restart. Adlard forced Camm into a good save with a dipping long-range effort and from the rebound substitute Harry Milner missed the ball when he would have had a certain tap in.

Up the other end Boyes was called into action in quick succession. He did well to turn Hines’ effort over the bar before he had to stop Ben Grist turning the ball into his net as he met a low cross from our number 10 Hines.

Camm was back in action just before the hour mark as he was at full stretch to deny Milner from range. We then had a couple of half chances before our number one was off his line to save at the feet of Adlard as Grimsby broke away on the counter.

With 10 minutes left on the clock we took the lead. A good move saw the ball played back to Newell whose stunning strike from 30-yards out found the top corner of the net.

It was then all hands-on deck as Grimsby pushed everyone forward and we had Camm to thank in the 91st minute as he kept out Adlard before we managed to scramble the corner clear. Our resolute defending continued until the final whistle as we moved into the third round.
