Ben Beresford, a player for one of our youth sides, has become the first ever player from grassroots football to receive a scholarship for Birmingham City’s under 16s.
He joined the club after being invited to train by coach Kevin Haynes following his release from Notts County at just 14 years old. The youngster quickly settled into his new team, where he regained his self-confidence and progressed rapidly, which he put down to “fantastic facilities, good teammates and great training sessions.”
Playing in the competitive MJPL League against several strong sides his impressive performances caught the eye of several clubs, including former Premier League Champions Leicester City. But he opted to sign for the Blues, creating history in the process by signing a 2-year scholarship.
First team manager Steve Chettle said: “We are delighted for Ben and it’s testament to the work the Kev has done with Ben and the rest of the Basford United Under 16’s.
“We are building a great reputation for producing players from within our own grassroots pathway and we want to continue this with more Under 16’s progressing in our Educational Academy and pushing this seasons Academy group that already progressed to the 2nd round of the FA Youth Cup. We have also had players from the Academy on the bench, making senior debuts and scoring for the First Team this season already. We look forward to continuing this progression both within the club and for those fortunate enough into the professional game as well.
"This will continue on Saturday 5th December when we host our 2020-21 academy trials at 11 am at Greenwich Avenue."
“Well done Ben form everyone at Basford United and we look forward to following your progress at Birmingham City”
Anyone who wishes to take part in the trails but is not currently within the club's youth phase must confirm their attendance by contacting Head of Academy and First Team Manager Steve Chettle.
