The only goal of the game came in the first half through Callum Chettle’s 36th minute strike.
In the second half we were reduced to 10 men as Lewis Carr picked up two yellow cards but we stood strong and held out for all three points.
The hosts started the game on the front foot but were unable to test Jordan Pierrepont thanks to a pair of good blocks from defender Lewis Carr. We then grew into the contest and a corner causes some issues for Stalybridge before they managed to get the ball clear.
Kane Richards then looked to have been sent through on goal but the final pass just got away from the forward as we looked to fashion our first chance of the afternoon. Up the other end a corner from the hosts was headed back across goal by Jonathan Ustabasi but the flag was up to put an end to the threat.
Ustabasi was involved again in the next chance for the hosts. A deflected effort from the Stalybridge wide man had Pierrepont back peddling but our ‘keeper was able to tip it over the bar.
On 36 minutes the game did have its first goal. A low ball into the box by Ryan Wilson was stabbed home by Chettle at the second time of asking to move us into the lead.
The hosts were straight on the back foot though and Evangelinos had an effort deflected wide and from the resultant corner Charley Doyle headed just wide.
We then had a chance to double our lead just before the break but Wilson’s low free kick was blocked as the first half ended with the score still 1-0.
At the start of the second Marcus Marshall had an effort blocked after some great work by Richards down the right. Kyle Dixon then fired just wide after we broke on the counter.
The hosts then had a counter of their own as Lewis Salmon burst forward before being fouled. From the free-kick Pierrepont pulled off a great save to keep out Evangelinos’ effort. That saw the hosts win a succession of corners that we stood up to and were able to deal with the danger.
We were then down to 10-men as Carr was given his marching orders for a second yellow card. From the free-kick Pierrepont produced a stunning save to keep out Evangelinos. Substitute Brad Gascoigne then put in a great block to cut out a low ball across the box.
The hosts continued to push forward and despite six minutes of added time our back line stood strong to claim all three points.
