Manager Steve Chettle reflects on the season's fixture list

Harry Worgan17 Jul 2021 - 12:32

Our manager Steve Chettle looks forward to the season, following the fixtures being release last Wednesday night, Alex Wood writes.

Chettle calms any doubts about being excited for the fixture release day, as this will be his third season in charge. He has been here before:
“You always look at your first game of the season; you always look where you are at Christmas.

“We are limited where we do go at Christmas because of the locality of where we play each other. But you always look at the first game of the season. You look for the ‘so-called’ big games as well. So we're no different to anybody in the Football League.”

The manager joked about his first impression of the fixture list:

“You have to play everybody twice," he said.“We're happy to be at home for the season’s first game. But it's a long year, and hopefully, we'll carry on playing and get through the season."

We will play Scarborough Athletic in the first game of the 2021/22 season at Greenwich Avenue, Saturday, August 14th. But this knowledge does not change any pre-season plans.

Chettle said: "We'll get to see Scarborough play. We'll send out our scout to go to Scarborough.

"We’ve got to plan our preseason as it’s based around limits of minutes in the first place for the players; we need to make sure we keep on top of that and thenWork on our shape. We're not just on much of it yet, because mainly it's been fitness work.”

Chettle isn’t lax on the 'Seadogs' though, despite us beating them 4-1 in our last game, back in October, before the season was curtailed.

He said: “We finished last season playing Scarborough at home, but now they have a new manager, new players. So, you see, it's going to be a new venture for us. But we just have to be ready. Make sure we're doing our homework properly.”

“The overall season aims haven't changed due to the fixture list coming out.

"We plan to look at the fixtures; we’ve got a tough October and a tough March. You know, some big games within those two months. But in between, you've got to play everybody as I say, it's the obvious thing to say, but we have to take the season in chunks."

Chettle does offer some astute insight into his thinking through the season and how fans should follow suit.

He explained: “The first four games will be our first chunk of what we're going to be looking at, and we have to plan properly for those, so we do our homework, do our work on ourselves and our work on the opposition and be as prepared as we can be.”

Despite all that was said, he was adamant the season aims have not changed, and as a club, we are still aiming to finish high up the table.

“The season aims are the same as before, we need to keep progressing.

"Season one curtailed we were fifth in the league, season two curtailed we were second in the league, you know, they're still our aims.

"Our aims are to be better than they were last season. Obviously the playoffs are the dream ticket, which is our ambitions, but you know, it's going to be a long hard year, and it's a tough league to do well in and get out of.”

You can watch Chettle's side in action against Nottingham Forest's under 23s on Tuesday evening (July 20th). Book tickets here.
