Like Good wine, Uniteds senior aged players stand the test of time

Basford United approach to blend experienced players with exciting youth continues to reap big dividends.

Tuesdays victory in the senior cup and the recent run of form from United,is a clear testimony that age is not a factor even at a top level like the NECL, and the experience and knowledge of the game is proving a key. United are currently on a 7 game 100% record against without question some of the best teams in the NECL, with the team playing some excellent football. Whilst the improvement started alot earlier than this and is a clear reflection of a squad coming together and hitting form at the right time,it is also no coincidence that the sigings of senior players has had a major impact. The like of Lee Hendrie, Franny Green, Mark Brooks, keeper Scott Miles and the continued occasional use of himself by manager Martin Carruthers have added great experience to the group, and provide a perfect balance to United to play expressive football and provide experience to deal with adversity.

This was clearly demonstrated In Tuesday nights Notts senior cup quarter final victory,as an out of sorts Basford not only found a way to get back into Tuesday nights cup tie, but win the game from a very difficult position when reduced to 10 men with 20 minutes to play when it would have been very easy to through in the towel.
Two of the goals came from a late 30s aged Mark Brooks and the winner from our experienced manager Martin Carruthers who continues to weigh in with crucial goals when needed. With Frannie Green giving great experience and leadership on Tuesday then the younger players can only respond to such and all played there part in a great victory.

United now have a weekend off before the focus starts again for a week Saturday against Lincoln Moorlands.
